The Australian climate is renowned for its harshness and variability, and is subject to such conditions as prolonged and intense rainfall, severe storms, tropical cyclones and storm surges. All of these factors contribute to the likelihood of flooding and it is important to understand the risks flood present to our personal safety.

Personal risks.

The reality of today's highly mobile lifestyle means that most of us at least travel through flood-prone areas on a regular basis for work, school, shopping and leisure activities. Be aware of the following:

  • Driving – Never drive through flood water unless instructed to do so by authorities. Driving through flood water is the number one cause of flood deaths.
  • Currents – Never walk or wade through flood waters. As little as 15cm of moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • Drains – Ensure children do not play in or near storm water drains. Suction and entrapment may occur suddenly and unexpectedly.
  • Electrocution – Stay clear of fallen power lines. Electricity passes easily through water.
  • Contamination – Wash your hands and feet with soap if you do come into contact with flood water. Sewage or chemicals can be found in flood water.
  • Slipping – Tread carefully. Slippery surfaces can cause falls and injuries.
